Why Choose Merbau Flooring
Merbau flooring is an extremely robust and sturdy exotic hardwood which is almost as strong as teak. This is a popular wood for flooring because it is so hard-wearing and durable. It is also a very beautiful timber which is often used in quality furniture. Merbau flooring is suitable for heavily populated rooms in the home, such as the hallway or sitting room and can be used in high traffic areas in commercial buildings because it is so long-lasting.
Merbau flooring is popular in the wood industry as it has good workability properties and takes to finishes readily. It sands well and has good holding ability for nails.
About Merbau Flooring
Also called Intsia Bijuga, Merbau trees can grow around 160 feet tall (50 m) and are part of the Fabaceae family. Merbau timber is also called Kwila and in the Philippines it is known as Taal. The trees are native to the Indo-Pacific and can be found growing in Indonesia, Sumatra, Borneo, Central Java, West Java, Tanzania, Madagascar, India and Australia.
The grain is straight or sometimes slightly interlocked and the wood surface is smooth and glossy but coarse. Merbau is harder than wenge or red oak and has a yellow brown to orange brown colour when it is first cut, which darkens over time to a rich reddish brown colour. It is also a very appealing wood as it can contain a gold speckle which runs through the grain and adds to its character. The outside bark of the tree is a greyish, light brown or light red colour.
The wood is moisture and termite resistant, so it is suitable for outdoor furniture. It also does not require a preservative treatment. However, it can stain black when it comes into contact with iron or moisture.
It is considered a luxurious wood and has been illegally logged, so people must be careful to obtain Merbau wood only from legitimate sources.
Merbau Wood can also be used in fine furniture for cabinet making, decorative woodwork, paneling and musical instruments. The wood was extensively used for the 2008 Summer Olympics in China. The seeds are edible and the bark and leaves are both used for medicinal purposes. The tree is also used as a dye source.
