There are many different types of finishes that can be applied to an oak floor and it can sometimes be hard for a customer to choose between them. At Naturally Wood we will take the time to explain the available finishes and treatments available, the effect they will have on the appearance and durability of your solid oak flooring, as well as the associated costs.
The cheapest way to achieve a desired appearance on your solid oak flooring is to apply a stain, varnish or lacquer after the floor has been laid. But there are a variety of heat and chemical treatments which can be applied to the oak whilst the flooring is being produced and which affect the colour and qualities of the timber right the way through.
Baked Oak | Fire Oak | Thermo Oak
To achieve a baked Oak, Fire Oak or Thermo Oak finish the natural oak wood is put into a drying kiln oven and over time the heat alters the original colour of the timber. The heat in the special kiln creates a drying process, which extracts all the moisture from the wood and changes the colour to a dark brown with a hint of red. Due to the low moisture levels in this heat-treated oak wood the structure of the timber is very stable. The finish does not affect the quality and durability of the solid oak floor and it is still an excellent choice for high traffic domestic or commercial floors.
This type of wood finish is suitable for aged and distressed floors, engineered floors and end grain floors. It is also available in all our bespoke parquet designs and 20mm structural engineered floors.
The additional cost to add this finish is approximately £15 per square metre but this does depend upon the product type.
Fumed Oak
For a Fumed Oak look the natural oak is placed into a sealed tank and the timber is smoked using ammonia, which reacts with the tannic acid in the oak. This creates a a medium to deep brown colour, giving it a similar appearance to Wenge and making it a good alternative to that type of wood. The treatment doesn’t change the properties of the wood so it is still an ideal choice for heavily used domestic or commercial floors.
Fumed Oak finish is suitable for aged and distressed floors, engineered floors, Solid T&G floors and end grain floors as well as all our bespoke parquet designs and 20mm structural engineered flooring This Fumed Oak finish is approximately an extra £20 per square metre depending on product type you choose.
Smoked Oak
Smoked Oak finish is similar to a Fumed Oak finish but gives a lighter smoked surface , creating a light to medium brown colour to the wood. By putting the natural oak in a sealed tank for 24 hours, the acid in the timber reacts with the ammonia, which is used to smoke the oak wood, resulting in a smoked oak finish.
This finish is available in aged and distressed, engineered and end grain flooring types and the smoking process does not affect the strength or other properties of the wood so it is still an excellent choice for high use commercial or domestic floors,. Smoked Oak is approximately £20 per square metre in addition to the initial cost of your oak floor.
In addition to the finishes described above oak floors can also be stained with a light oak, medium oak or dark oak stain to achieve a similar effect on the wood to these finishes. If a natural oak look is preferred then solid oak floors can be finished with a natural oil or lacquer.
