Choosing Flooring for the Hallway
Solid wood flooring for your hallway needs to be very practical as well as stylish. This area of your home has the most footfall of any room and the hallway will be subject to scuffs, marks, potential dents and wear and tear with all the comings and goings of a normal household.
Naturally Wood Floors can advise you on the right solid wood flooring for your hallway to get the flooring type, wood type, patterns and finishes perfect for your needs.
Flooring types
As a hallway often doesn’t contain much furniture to break up the pattern a bespoke parquet design with parquet borders works well here. T&G strips can also look very effective in large spaces, particularly laid with wide planks.
Wood types
Hard wood species such as Oak, Teak, Merbau, Maple, Wenge or Jatoba are the perfect choice for the hallway as they give good protection against wear and tear.
You need to consider the size of your hallway when choosing the colour of your wood. Light wood types such as maple or oak will make a small space appear larger. Or if you have a large entrance hallway then you can afford to be more daring by choosing a dark wood such as Wenge, Merbau or Jatoba.. A dark exotic wood can look very chic and modern especially teamed with light décor and large mirrors to reflect the light.
For a striking look, combined with strength and toughness you could choose the warm honey tones of Burmese teak for your solid wood flooring in the hallway. Burmese teak has a naturally high oil and rubber content in the wood, which makes it resistant to water, ideal for when wet shoes and umbrellas are brought in the front door.
Patterns
If you choose a bespoke parquet design for the solid wood flooring in your hallway then there are many patterns to choose from. These patterns can be as elaborate or simple as your taste dictates. A parquet strip floor is unfussy and will give your hallway a clean look. If you prefer a pattern then bespoke parquet flooring comes in panels and more complex designs such as herringbone, double herringbone, 5:1 basket, single basket weave, treble basket weave and chevron. We also have a range of parquet borders in contrasting wood types, which add colour and interest to your hallway flooring.
Finishes
There are a range of finishes that can be applied to the solid wood flooring in your hallway. Some of these finishes are just decorative and will add to the beauty of the wood, such as different coloured stains. Others will add to the durability of the wood, such as lacquers and oils.
As the solid wood flooring in your hallway will be experiencing a lot of wear and tear you will need something to protect it from marks and scuffs. Lacquer finishes will help protect the wood and make it more hard wearing. Lacquer is a very low maintenance option, and will last between 2 and 10 years before it needs to be reapplied.
An oiled finish does need to be replaced every 1 to 3 years but if the whole floor doesn’t need re-oiling then just the places where the oil has rubbed away can be treated. Oil finishes enhance the natural beauty of the wood type you have chosen rather than dramatically changing its colour, so the true, natural tones of the wood shine through.
Maintaining Your Hallway Floor
You want your solid wood flooring in your hallway to remain as beautiful as possible for as long as possible so maintenance is very important,
Here the finish that has been applied is key to how you treat your hallway floor.
Whether your floor is stained, lacquered or oiled it must be regularly cleaned. A lacquer finish will need a refresher maintenance polish applied too. Once the lacquered finish on your flooring shows signs of wear then it will need to be sanded down and a new coat of lacquer added.
Oiled finishes do need to be replaced more regularly than lacquer but any deep scratches or marks can be sanded down without the whole floor needing to be re-treated.
A mat just in front of the door for people to wipe their feet on is essential to help keep your hallway floor as clean and mark free as possible. Other rugs or mats will help protect your floor too but be careful if your hallway floor is polished as rugs can cause slips to occur.
