About Walnut Flooring
Walnut trees come from the genus Juglans, and in Latin this means ‘Jupiter’s acorn’ or ‘a nut fit for a God’.
Walnut trees are deciduous and grow to between 10 and 40 metres tall after about twenty years when they are fully-grown and completely mature. They have prominent broad crowns and the nuts they produce can be eaten either cooked or raw but are also rich in oil, which is used in cookery, in salad dressings and to flavour meat and fish.
Walnut trees have been used to treat a variety of common health problems in traditional Chinese medicine, including asthma.
Walnut is primarily found in the east of North America and is the only dark hardwood native to that area. The colour of walnut wood can vary from an off white in the sapwood to a deep chocolate hue in its heartwood and when air -dried, walnut takes on it’s distinctive dark brown tone with purple hints. Walnut mostly has a straight grain but can also exhibit some intricate twisting patterns too.
The walnut tree is a very strong tree and resistant to the cold weather, which makes the timber itself incredibly hard and dense and therefore an excellent material perfect for flooring.
Our walnut flooring is made from American Black Walnut which originates from America. It has a deep rich dark brown colour with a hint of purple and black in the grain. It is of a soft to medium hardness.
